Claims of abuse at Jersey home rejected by daughter

The daughter of a manager of a Jersey children's home said abuse allegations against her father were false.

Marion Robson gave evidence at Jersey's historic care inquiry and spoke about her father Jim Thomson, who a former care home resident said repeatedly raped her.

He was superintendent at the Haut de la Garenne home from 1977 to 1984.

The inquiry is investigating accusations of child abuse in Jersey's care system dating back to 1945.

'Prowled corridors'

Ms Robson, who also worked in Haut de la Garenne while her father was in charge, said she first heard the allegations last year.

Earlier in the inquiry a former resident of the home, Tina Maguire, waived her anonymity to say Mr Thomson repeatedly raped her in the 1970s.

Another witness has said Mr Thomson "prowled the corridors with a cane" he used excessively.

Ms Robson said she was horrified by the allegations, which she called "melodramatic and utter nonsense".

She also denied an allegation she slapped a child at Les Chenes secure school, saying she never even worked there.

Chief Minister Ian Gorst has set a deadline of December 2016 for the inquiry to conclude its investigations.

The hearing continues.
