Jersey has two types of taxi operators - private hire and rank cabs

Jersey's new taxi strategy "will not benefit customers", according to the competition regulator.

Michael Byrne from the regulator said the changes could lead to higher fares and a greater burden on the industry.

Transport Minister Deputy Eddie Noel announced a number of new rules, including a requirement to be wheelchair-friendly.

The changes, being phased in over the next three years, will also allow private hire cars to use the rank.

They would also allow rank cabs to take private hire bookings but Mr Byrne said it still kept a two-tier system.

He said: "We are concerned that the reforms that the department is seeking to introduce retain a two-tier system which is confusing for consumers.

"Ultimately what consumers want is a service that is available when needed, is safe, reliable and value for money. It is not at all clear that these proposals will meet those needs."
