States staff will gain an extra days' leave to compensate for Liberation Day falling on a Saturday last year.

Jersey politicians voted against creating an extra public holiday for all islanders in February.

Nick Corbel, from Unite, said the move was recently approved with the States employment board.

Chief minister Senator Ian Gorst, who chairs the board, said it was in the interests of "good employment relations".

He originally voted against the extra day's leave for all islanders, which included States staff, but said the change came after several months' discussion.

Collective agreements attached to public, bank and customary holidays in the public sector are being reviewed, he added.

Liberation Day marks 9 May 1945 when the island was freed from German occupation after five years.
