Public health officials have urged people to stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water

Temperatures have hit a record 38C (100F) in the Channel Islands.

The figure for St Helier in Jersey came as public health officials urged people to stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water.

The previous record temperature in the Channels Islands was 36C (96.8F) in August 2003.

Tuesday is forecast to be very hot again, but temperatures are expected to drop on Wednesday as Atlantic winds replace hot winds from Europe.

Dr Nicola Brink, Guernsey's director of public health, urged people not to underestimate the heat and to look out for their neighbours.

She said: "Check up on each other, make sure they've got supplies, and - I can't emphasise enough - keep yourself hydrated."
