Jersey's Battle of Flowers Christmas Parade has been cancelled for the second year running.

The last parade was held in 2021, but it was called off last year in the wake of the fatal explosion in a block of flats in Haut du Mont.

The St Helier parade involves floats festooned with lights and decorations.

The Battle of Flowers Association said limited resources had forced the decision but it expressed hopes for a return in 2024.

"We're disappointed not to be able to bring some free festive cheer to the town centre again this Christmas, the exhibitors in particular are crestfallen," a spokesman said.

The association was initially involved with one float at the St Helier Fete de Noue festivities, before developing the full parade, which it has been organising and funding.

This had placed a "considerable call on our limited resources," the spokesman added, although support for exhibitors' expenses from the Economic Development Department had been gratefully received.

"We think the event has value, if others agree, we can partner up and parade again in Christmas 2024," he said.

'Storm damage'

Meanwhile, St Martin's Battle of Flowers Association has announced its dissolution "following over 20 years of community collaboration".

The association says the "struggles became too great" amid difficulties finding a site to build its float, a storm-damaged marquee and young members leaving to pursue higher education.

It said there would be a "final hurrah" black-tie event in April 2024, to celebrate its achievements.

Founding member Beth Gicquel said the decision had been made with "great sadness".
