A charity from Jersey said its finances were being "stretched" because more people were turning to it for help.

The St Vincent de Paul Society said its foodbank was helping more than 600 households a week.

The organisation operates in the heart of St Helier and it is one of two charities that offer £20 electricity vouchers.

Dominic Egre, from the organisation, said the situation had got worse recently.

He said: "This was the first time we stayed open over Christmas and that was because of demand."

He added: "Normally we would take a little break but there was so much demand, both us and the Salvation Army pretty much operated through Christmas.

"This was probably the busiest Christmas I've ever had and I've been doing this for about five years now."
