A mum from Jersey collected an award on behalf of her late son for making a difference on the island.

Kay Lowe's son Dean, 48, and his son Charlie, 11, died in hospital after they were hit by a vehicle in Grouville, on 5 August.

The DIFERA awards, which celebrate diversity and people and groups on the island, happened on Friday.

Mr Lowe was awarded for his work with Jersey Employment Trust who help people with disabilities into work.

Mrs Lowe said her son would have "loved" the event and award and she was proud of him.

"He was such an outgoing person, he loved the job and loved making a difference," she said.

"Sadly, he won't be making a difference anymore. But through the Charlie and Dean fund, they will make a difference to the young people of the island and adults alike.

"He was our only son, and we bought him up to be caring and loving."

She said 1,300 people attended her son and grandson's funeral and there was "so much love" for the pair.

"Jersey wants to promote and celebrate people who do good on the island, there are so many different communities that do work in diversity.

"It is brilliant. Dean would have loved it."

Kate Wright, who led a taskforce this year to tackle violence against women and girls, won the leader award.

The group aimed to reduce such crimes and behaviour in Jersey.

Ms Wright said she felt "proud, grateful and humble" to be recognised.

"We have some brilliant young people with strong ideas about the kind of community they want to live in and the values that really matter," she added.

"They are prepared to stand up and say that. They are brilliant."
