Jersey's government paid out more than £400,000 to people injured in crimes last year.

A report by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, external said £423,553 was awarded in 2023, an average of £15,687 in the 27 cases.

The amount of compensation has increased every year since 2020 when it was £145,341.

The total amount awarded "is greatly influenced by the seriousness of the cases considered", said the report.

There was also the highest number of applications since 2020, with 42 cases, of which 27 were resolved.

A fall in the number of cases resolved was "primarily a result of the delay in obtaining disclosure and requested information in order to consider the claim", said the report.

Anyone who receives an injury from a violent crime can apply for compensation.
