Jersey school pupils take donations to foodbank for Lent

Children have sorted the food out and learnt about how the donations help those in need

Pupils from a Jersey primary school have been delivering donations to a foodbank as part of Lent.

Students from FCJ School have delivered items to the foodbank at St Vincent de Paul Society.

Year 5 teacher Theresa Taylor said children have been able to see where the food goes which has helped them to "relate" to the people they are supporting.

Ms Taylor said it had been a "real opportunity" to be in the community.

The school's motto is 'Res Non Verba' which means 'deeds not words'

Ms Taylor said the opportunity had enabled children to recognise there were young families and elderly people "who are by themselves".

She added: "It really brings the experience to life.

"At the heart of our school mission is companionship and it is a real opportunity to come and be in the community, to give time."

Oscar and Hadaffah were two of the pupils that volunteered to help

Year 3 students Oscar and Hadaffah were two of the students who volunteered to help.

Oscar said his family had given him "lots of donations" to bring in.

"We've been delivering food to the poor so they can get food free because other people don't have as much food as us," he said.

Hadaffah said she had been "doing things that help people" for Lent - instead of giving something up.

"Our school motto is 'Res Non Verba' which means 'deeds not words'," Hadaffah said.

"So we're actually doing something instead of saying that we will do it."
