Jersey school appoints new head teacher

A Jersey school has appointed a new head teacher to start in September.
Matthew Burke said he would take over Beaulieu Convent School and described it as an "exciting time" for the private school.
He said the school would also celebrate a number of "100-year" events during 2024.
Mr Burke said Beaulieu has "had its challenges in the past year or two", including a government review that raised issues.
Among criticisms raised that have since been addressed was that teachers were not checking pupils' "prior knowledge and understanding", resulting in them sitting "passively" in class.
Mr Burke explained there would be a celebration throughout the year as the school marks significant anniversaries.
In May, the school is planning to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Mere St Felix, foundress of the school.
In October, it will be 100 years since the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception moved to Jersey, a school spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Sister Marie Louise - who was the school's head teacher for 31 years and received an MBE for services to education in Jersey - turns 100 years old in September.
"It is a fantastic thing," said Mr Burke.
"I think anyone who knows anything about Beaulieu knows about Sister Louise.
"In October we celebrate 100-years of the sisters in Jersey.
"Not only was the school founded on this site, but the sisters also came 100 years ago."
'Extended family'
He said the school was in a "place where its right for development" and wants to ensure it becomes "even better".
"I think every school presents its own challenges, and Beaulieu has had its challenges in the past year or two, but the way I describe the school is as an extended family," Mr Burke added.
