Two people have died when a crane collapsed at Sao Paulo's stadium that will host the opening match of the Football World Cup 2014 in the summer.

The accident happened when the crane was hoisting a module on the metal roof structure, said Odebrecht Infrastructure, the company building the arena.

The crane fell at about 13:00 local time - when most of the workers were reportedly away on their lunch breaks.

The crane driver was taken to hospital, but later released. An LED display panel outside the venue was also damaged.

The company said the structure of the stadium was not damaged, but a thorough investigation is continuing.

Brazil has admitted it is struggling to have all 12 stadiums ready in time for the World Cup, and Wednesday's tragedy is seen as another setback for the organisers.
