Syria conflict: Life in besieged Homs district

Almost 600,000 people are currently living in besieged areas in Syria, according to the UN.

Three-quarters are surrounded by government forces in several suburbs of Damascus and in the al-Waer district of Homs.

Al-Waer is the last area still held by rebels in what was once dubbed the "capital of the revolution".

Now, scores of activists there have gone on hunger strike to demand the government allow humanitarian organisations to deliver desperately needed supplies of food and medicine.

The BBC had gained exclusive material from al-Waer showing how people are struggling to survive.
