Dozens of emergency vehicles converged on Washington Navy Yard, the naval installation in the US capital, as news of a shooting emerged on Monday morning.

Initial reports of the number hurt were hard to verify at the base, where as many as 3,000 people work.

Personnel at the yard were ordered to "shelter in place", the Navy said.

Law enforcement officials were deployed on rooftops to try to contain the situation.

A helicopter rescues an apparent victim of the multiple shootings at the Navy Yard.

Later, workers at the yard were escorted from the facility with their hands up, as officials tried to empty the complex safely.

President Barack Obama has been briefed by top officials and has directed federal agencies to co-ordinate their response efforts.

Anxious onlookers gathered to await news of casualties.

The Washington Navy Yard is the US Navy's oldest shore installation, first opened in the early 19th Century.
