Barack Obama: Default would be devastating

There has been "some progress" on talks to reach agreement on the US budget, President Barack Obama has said.

The country's government was forced into a shutdown as a result of political deadlock, and could default on its national debt unless a deal to raise its debt limit is struck.

At a soup kitchen in Washington DC, Mr Obama said a default would be "devastating".
