Residents and shopkeepers took to the streets early on Tuesday morning to begin to clear up some of the damage after rioting broke out in the US town of Ferguson, Missouri. The violence followed the decision by a grand jury that a police officer who shot unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in August will not be charged.

Michael Brown was shot by a white police officer, Darren Wilson, on 9 August, sparking protests

Demonstrators flooded onto the streets of Ferguson after Monday's grand jury decision, with several buildings set alight

Police have said that the latest violence in the suburb of St Louis, Missouri, was "probably much worse" than on any night since the teenager's death

Many in the African-American community had called for the police officer Mr Wilson to be charged with murder

The Missouri grand jury's decision to recommend no charges came after three months of deliberation. The jury comprised nine white and three black members

Authorities said that more than 80 people were arrested during the riots overnight in the St Louis area

The family of Michael Brown said violent protests were not in the spirit of their son and appealed for people to remain calm

A police chief said there were about 20 separate fires that firefighters fought to contain around Ferguson on Monday night
