Cash Askew, a transgender musician from Oakland, is confirmed dead. The 22-year-old was one of two members of the band Them Are Us Too. Her girlfriend, Anya Taylor, said Ms Askew – who came out as transgender about two years ago - was a “total goofball”.

Alex Ghassan (R) and his long-distance fiancee, Hanna Henriikka Ruax, from Helsinki, Finland died in the fire. Mr Ghassan, who was father to twin toddlers, was director and producer who worked with Spike Lee. Ms Ruax was a yoga instructor, entrepreneur and social justice activist who only arrived in Oakland for a visit last month.

Nick Gomez-Hall, 25, was well-known on the music scene in Providence, Rhode Island, for playing guitar and singing in the two-man band Nightmom. He was a 2013 graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he concentrated on American Studies. His employer, independent publisher Counterpoint Press, said he was “kind, considerate, hilarious”.

Nick Walrath, 31, was recently hired as a lawyer with San Francisco law firm Durie Tangri. He had just spent a year working as a judicial law clerk for the city's federal district court. He texted his girlfriend, Alexis Abrams-Bourke, from inside the burning structure, saying there was a fire and that he loved her. She said his ultimate goal was to work for the American Civil Liberties Union. "I feel like my future has been ripped from me,'' she told the Associated Press

Ara Jo, 29, was a vibrant artist and community organiser. Her boyfriend, Terry Ewing, said she raised money and awareness for American Indians and others protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline Project in North Dakota
