Justin Bieber has been criticised for touching the biggest trophy in North American ice hockey, the Stanley Cup.

The singer was photographed next to it in the locker room of NHL champions the Chicago Blackhawks.

Dozens of fans criticised Justin Bieber for his actions and for hanging a team shirt in the background with his name on it.

The Canadian pop star was due to play a concert at the team's United Center arena when he had the photo taken.

One tweet said: "Justin Bieber got to touch the Stanley Cup. Disgrace to the game, to Chicago, and to humanity in general."

Another user said: "Justin Bieber has touched the Stanley Cup more times than some of the best hockey players to ever live. Fury."

Earlier in the day the singer's fans angered NHL players who were taking part in a union meeting at the hotel Justin Bieber was staying at.

Ice hockey player Zenon Konopka tweeted: "@justinbieber I'm a fan of you being Canadian &even ur music but ur killing our NHLPA meetings with ur fan club screaming outside the hotel."

The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the fifth time last month against the Boston Bruins winning 4-2 over six games.

The first Stanley Cup was awarded to Montreal HC in 1893.

Montreal Canadiens have the most wins followed by Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
