Blur bassist Alex James has applied to trademark a drink called Britpop.

The musician, who also produces his own cheeses, has applied to the intellectual property office (IPO) for the trademark.

His application, which could still be challenged by rival entrepreneurs, is for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

The term Britpop was coined in the early 1990s to describe the UK music scene at the time, which was dominated by a rivalry between Blur and Oasis.

Blur's first album Leisure was released in 1991 with their most recent release, Think Tank, coming out in 2003.

James performed with his Blur bandmates Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree in 2012 for a show in Hyde Park, which coincided with the end of the Olympics.

In the same year, Blur received a Brit Award for outstanding contribution to music.

James lives on a farm in Oxfordshire and runs a food and music festival with Jamie Oliver called The Big Feastival.

Last year the likes of Rizzle Kicks, Lianne La Havas and Basement Jaxx performed at the event.

The bass player also produces eight different types of cheese including Blue Monday, Figgy Pudding and Farleigh Wallop.
