In pictures: England's penalty woes of the past

England manager Roy Hodgson says he will consider using a psychologist at this summer's World Cup in Brazil to ensure players are better prepared for a penalty shoot-out.
"It will be about their ability to block out the next morning's headlines," he said.
"If a psychologist can find a way then we'd be very, very happy."
Six of the last 10 major tournaments England have qualified for have ended in defeat via spot-kicks.
1990 - World Cup, Italy
England reached the semi-final of the competition where they met West Germany.
Gary Lineker took advantage of some defensive uncertainty to level the score to 1-1 10 minutes from time, which took the game to a shoot-out.
Penalties followed and, after Stuart Pearce's effort was saved and Chris Waddle blazed over, England were out.
1996 - European Championships, England
Six years later and England met their rivals in another penalty shoot-out, again at the semi-final stage.
There was promise for this one as the tournament had already seen England winning a penalty shoot-out.
They beat Spain at Wembley after the match finished goalless after extra time.
However, they couldn't carry that form to the next round with Gareth Southgate's famous miss helping the Germans win 6-5 on penalties.
1998 - France World Cup
Having got through the group stages, England met Argentina in the second round.
The game saw an 18-year-old Michael Own burst on to the international scene after taking the ball past the majority of the Argentine defence to give England a 2-1 lead.
But after the South American side levelled at 2-2 in normal time and having had David Beckham sent off, misses by Paul Ince and David Batty from the spot saw England beaten 4-3 on penalties.
2004 - Portugal European Championships
In a tense quarter-final game, England drew 2-2 with the hosts after extra-time.
The shoot-out was not great for three lions supporters.
A forgettable tournament for David Beckham ended by sending a penalty miles over the bar.
Rui Costa missed his kick but when Darius Vassell's shot was saved by Ricardo, the Portugal goalkeeper stepped up to beat David James and knock England out 6-5.
2006 - Germany World Cup
Once again, penalties beckoned against Portugal in a quarter final after Wayne Rooney was sent off during a 0-0 draw in normal time.
This time Ricardo saved from Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher before Cristiano Ronaldo sealed a 3-1 shoot-out win for his side.
2012 - Poland - Ukraine European Championships
England reached the quarter-finals to set up a tie with Italy.
After the game finished goalless, as on previous six occasions, they were left heartbroken.
Ashley Young struck the bar and Ashley Cole's effort was saved by Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon before Andrea Pirlo audaciously chipped in his spot-kick and former West Ham midfielder Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive penalty to see Italy win 4-2.
