Snapchat has launched a new update to its app which prioritises news organisations over friends and many users are NOT happy.

The new version puts content from Discover, where sites such as the Daily Mail and Cosmopolitan contribute articles, to the top of Stories.

Stories was typically where content from friends was housed.

It now means users see links to the news organisations' content before they see new stories from their friends.

Joshua Hirsch tweeted: "SNAPCHAT I DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR STUPID LIVE STORIES OR YOUR STUPID DISCOVER FEATURE", external

"Discover is a platform for publishers to tell great stories," a spokeswoman for Snapchat told Newsbeat.

"Since we launched, we have been experimenting and learning what content works well. We're very excited about where we are today and making Discover accessible on our Stories page feels like a natural fit."

Andrew Zuniga tweeted: "Dear @Snapchat, please stop trying to get us to watch the "Discover" stories. We do not care, and please give us back best friends.", external

Discover is one of the areas in which Snapchat makes money.

Launched in January, it allows large media organisations, such as CNN, Vice and Yahoo! to promote their articles directly to Snapchat's audience. Snapchat can then charge a fee for that promotion.

The app has proved popular with young people so it means Snapchat already has the target audience that many media organisations want.

Jessica Denton tweeted: "I think I'm the only person who uses the "discover" feature on Snapchat. I utilize it by sending every weird thing I see to @MaddieMcWeezy.", external

Vodafone recently revealed 75% of the instant-messaging traffic on its UK network was down to the mobile app.

"Snapchat is now hiring its own team of journalists," said Enders Analysis consultant Ian Maude last month.

"It is becoming a content distribution platform."
