A tour of Beth's flooded student house in Carlisle after Storm Desmond
- Published
Thousands of homes have been hit by the floods caused by Storm Desmond.
One of the people affected is Beth Simpson, a 21-year-old student who lives in Carlisle, Cumbria.
She has been forced to couch surf with friends as she looks for a new place to live.
"Going in there and just seeing the house destroyed, it was heartbreaking," she told Newsbeat. "It's just a mess. Everything's covered in mud and sludge and it smells foul."
Beth went back on Monday to collect some of her stuff from the house, which she shared with eight other people.
"It's our entire lives. It's our lives for the last two years just scattered everywhere. The downstairs is awful.
"It's really not liveable, it's terrible."
She remarked on how kind strangers have been to people affected by the flooding.
"I've stayed with two lots of friends so far but it's really not fair on them.
"They have to look after us, but I suppose that's the spirit of the people in Carlisle. People have been so, so kind.
"Strangers have been offering beds and duvets and cups of hot tea and looking after people, offering showers and things like that.
"It's been really overwhelming the support that we've had."
Meanwhile, engineers are working to reconnect thousands of homes left without power.
Schools in Lancashire and Cumbria have been closed and travel is still disrupted with more rain is expected and 16 flood warnings in place.
