Radio 1's Big Weekend goes to Exeter in Devon with Coldplay headlining

Radio 1's Big Weekend will take place at Exeter in Devon this year.

Coldplay, Bring Me The Horizon and Chase & Status are the first three acts announced for the two-day event, which will take place on 28 and 29 May.

More artists will be announced soon with ticketing details for Exeter's Powderham Castle revealed on 21 March.

Big Weekend is Europe's largest free ticketed festival and as usual, the majority of people going will be from the local area.

Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin says Big Weekend 2016 will mean a huge amount to him personally because he was born and raised in Exeter.

He said: "I lived the first few years of my life less than 500 yards from where we'll be performing so this couldn't be more of a homecoming for me.

"Guy, Will, Jonny and I are honoured to be on the bill and we're looking forward to a very special show."

Craig David and Ellie Goulding will also be playing at Big Weekend.

Chase & Status say they should have new material ready for Big Weekend

Radio 1 and BBC Learning will again produce Radio 1's Academy, which aims to inspire 16 to 19-year-olds in the local area to take the next step in their careers.

It'll include a series of special events in April and May such as radio shows, gigs, masterclasses and Q&As.

Controller of Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Ben Cooper, said: "We've taken Lady Gaga to Carlisle, Taylor Swift to Norwich and now we're taking Chris Martin back home.

"We're very proud to be able to bring such a diverse range of acts to Exeter, where they'll be part of our biggest weekend of the year."

Exeter City Council Leader Pete Edwards, said: "This is so exciting for the city and for the young people of Exeter and Teignbridge.

"The atmosphere will be amazing at Powderham Castle - a once in a lifetime experience."

Last year's Big Weekend took place in Norwich with Muse, Taylor Swift and Foo Fighters performing.

Since 2003, the event has travelled around the UK to cities and towns including Derry, Glasgow, Bangor, Sunderland, Maidstone and Dundee.

Radio 1's Big Weekend will be broadcast live on Radio 1, streamed in vision, with highlights on 1Xtra. All performances will be available to watch on demand on Radio 1's BBC iPlayer channel.
