Ranga, bogan and mugachino among new words added to Australian dictionary

"Feeling schmick in your budgie smugglers having a chardy in the arvo with ya bunji."

Confused? It roughly translates as "feeling smart in your Speedos having a glass of wine in the afternoon with your mate."

Some of those words are among thousands of new terms added to the Australian National Dictionary.

The updates include slang terms such as 'ranga' (someone with red hair) and 'bogan' (someone uncultured).

Many of the phrases have been popularised by TV shows. Others have historic origins.

This update, which includes 6,000 new terms, is the first to the Australian National Dictionary since its publication in 1988.

What is it called when your cappuccino is served in a mug? A mugachino of course.

Not all Australians like the term though.

If you're offered a snot block, say yes. It might not sound very nice but as you can see from the tweet below it has a very deceiving name.

It's not only single words which have made it into the dictionary, they've also added phrases

Some athletes at the recent Rio Olympics could have done "a Bradbury".

This phrase comes from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City when Steven Bradbury became the first Australian ever to win a winter gold medal.

He won in short-track speed skating after the competitors in front of him all crashed out.

It was so unexpected that the term was coined "to do a Bradbury" and is now used to refer to anything which is a massive surprise.

This sounds fun

"Goon of Fortune" has been added. This is a drinking game involving pegging bags of wine known as "goonsacks" to the washing line.

And some Australians want it added to the Olympics...

A couple of the words might even seem familiar

You can order a babyccino in most of your favourite coffee shops in the UK these days. It's a small frothed milk drink designed for young children.

"Bogan" is an often used phrase to describe someone who's uncultured or unsophisticated.

And you might have seen Summer Heights High in which the main character regularly uses the word "ranga" - a derogatory word for someone with red hair.
