The Chapecoense players who didn't travel to Colombia

The world of football is in shock after a plane carrying members of a top Brazilian club crashed in Colombia, killing at least 76 people.

The aircraft, flying from Brazil via Bolivia, was carrying members of the Chapecoense team.

But a photo of a near-empty changing room shows the horror of the players who did not travel with their teammates.

Brazilian news outlet Diário Catarinense tweeted a picture of three players coming to terms with the deaths of their friends.

Journalist Euan McTear says the son of Chapecoense's coach should have been on the flight.

Nine of the club's players didn't travel with the rest of the squad on the chartered flight, according to local media.

They were Alejandro Martinuccio, Nenem, Demerson, Marcelo Boeck, Andrei, Hyoran, Nivaldo, Moises and Rafael Lima.

Goalkeeper Marcelo Boeck did not travel because it was his birthday.

The player's agent told Portuguese newspaper A Bola that he was celebrating his 32nd birthday back home.

Alejandro Martinuccio was meant to be in the travelling squad but stayed at home due to injury.

He tweeted: "Please pray for my teammates."

Chapecoense have also changed their club crest from green to black in the wake of the crash.

Chapecoense's tweet showed the change in colour.

The team had been due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, against Atletico Nacional. They too changed their crest to black.

Their Twitter avatar is accompanied by the hashtag #EstaMosConChapecoense - which means: "We are with Chapecoense".

Atletico Nacional paid tribute to their opponents on Twitter.

It's been reported that Atletico Nacional's players have asked the competition's organisers to award Chapecoense the cup.

However, the club told Newsbeat that they have made no official request.
