BPM clubbers in Mexico were told shooting was fireworks before being evacuated

A gunman has opened fire at the closing night of a 10-day BPM music festival in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

A police officer says at least four people are dead and 12 injured outside the Blue Parrot's entrance.

Valerie Lee, US editor of Mixmag, was there and says they had to hide behind a concrete wall before being escorted out of the venue.

"About 20 minutes after we arrived, we heard four to five shots ring out," she's told Newsbeat.

Valerie Lee tweeted that she'd got out OK.

She also said she thought there were five bodies on the ground.

"There was a moment of processing [and] people started running towards an exit of any sort. We went into a separate walled off area behind a big, cement wall and crouched down waiting to hear what was going on."

Valerie said a security guard told them not to worry to start with and said it was just fireworks going off outside.

This video shows people running away from the scene.

But she says other people came in and said they'd seen somebody with a gun, so they decided to run out of a backstage exit and into the street.

"It was at that point that we started crying and shaking. But even in a panic people were trying to be as calm as they could be.

DJ Jackmaster, who's from Glasgow, also said there was a situation in Playa del Carmen.

"We actually had some friends outside when the shooting happened and they were about 20ft (6m) away from the shooter.

"As they were running away they saw dead bodies.

"We had another friend who said that they saw a girl who was shot on the floor and one of their friends tried to lean over and see if they could help her, get her away and the police said for her to step away and not touch her and that there was no point."

Valerie also says she'd heard reports of a shooting at another club in Playa del Carmen.

She also said she thought the dead at the Parrot were tourists and locals.

Valerie said that the music in the club kept playing while the shooting took place outside the front entrance and thinks people inside probably didn't know anything about it.

This was the line-up for the closing night at the Blue Parrot.

BPM organisers said three members of its security team were killed in the shooting, which it said was carried out by a lone gunman.

"We are overcome with grief over this senseless act of violence and we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement and government officials as they continue their investigation," BPM said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
