A history of Hollywood sex scandals

The Harvey Weinstein sex abuse story isn't going away.

Several women have now spoken out against him, including Cara Delevingne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. He's accused of rape and harassment.

The film-maker says he "regrets" what happened but denies having non-consensual sex.

But from the casting couch to under-age sex, this is not the first Hollywood sex scandal to become headline news.

There's no suggestion any of these stories are linked to Harvey Weinstein.

Fatty Arbuckle

The first major Hollywood scandal started at a party in 1921 and involved the first million-dollar star.

Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle was a comedian.

He was at a party with a struggling actress, Virginia Rappe.

They ended up in a hotel bedroom together - minutes later she was heard screaming.

Guests rushed in and found her in agony - and saying "he did this to me".

She died later that week with a ruptured bladder.

Virginia's friend said Fatty had raped and accidentally killed her.

He was charged with manslaughter. It took three trials, and he was eventually cleared.

But the public still seemed to think he was guilty, and he was often heckled in the street.

Errol Flynn

There isn't really any Hollywood star now with a reputation like Errol Flynn.

He was known as "the most beautiful man who ever lived" and was the inspiration for the phrase "in like Flynn."

He apparently said that he liked his whisky old and his women young.

Onscreen, he was best known as a swashbuckling swordsman. In reality he had a reputation for drinking, fighting and sleeping around.

But in 1943 he went on trial accused of having sex with two under-age women, Betty Hansen and Peggy Satterlee. They were both 17 at the time.

When he was arrested, he said about Betty Hansen: "I'm bewildered. I can't understand it. I hardly touched the girl."

His lawyers accused the girls of sleeping with married men and having an illegal abortion.

The jury of nine women and three men cleared him.

One of his accusers, Peggy Satterlee said: "I knew those women would acquit him. They just sat and looked adoringly at him."

His career never recovered.

Roman Polanski

This story started 40 years ago - and isn't over yet.

In 1977 the film director had sex with a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson's Hollywood home.

Samantha Gailey said she hadn't consented, but he wouldn't "take no for an answer".

He was arrested, charged and admitted having unlawful sex. He spent 42 days having psychiatric evaluation in prison, but was allowed to travel afterwards.

But he fled before being sentenced - first to the UK and then to his home in France.

He carried on making films in Europe. In 2003 he won an Oscar for The Pianist.

There have been various legal wranglings ever since. In 2009 he was put under house arrest in Switzerland.

His victim has now asked for the case to be dismissed "out of mercy for myself".

Two more women have come forward with similar stories.

Roman Polanski still hasn't returned to America and is in his 80s now.

Woody Allen

Woody Allen is a Hollywood institution. He's been working across six decades. The director, writer, actor and comedian has won four Oscars.

He's also had his fair share of controversy.

In 1992 he split up with his girlfriend Mia Farrow because he was having an affair with her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn.

The break-up was bitter, and claims came out that Woody Allen had molested his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow when she was seven years old.

He denied it and a panel of psychologists decided that Dylan hadn't been assaulted.

A judge described his behaviour as "grossly inappropriate".

And a prosecutor said there was "probable cause" to charge the film-maker, but he'd decided against it to protect the little girl.

The story has never gone away. In 2014 Dylan Farrow wrote an open letter to the New York Times.

She wrote: "He talked to me while he did it, whispering that I was a good girl, that this was our secret, promising that we'd go to Paris and I'd be a star in his movies."

She also named stars from his movies: "What if it had been your child, Cate Blanchett? Louis CK? Alec Baldwin?

"What if it had been you, Emma Stone? Or you, Scarlett Johansson?

"You knew me when I was a little girl, Diane Keaton. Have you forgotten me?"

He continued to deny it: "Of course, I did not molest Dylan."

Corey Haim and Corey Feldman

"The Two Coreys" were teen idols and best friends in the 1980s. They starred in seven movies together.

Corey Haim became a drug addict and died in 2010.

Since then Corey Feldman has spoken out about their lives as child stars.

He claims that Corey Haim was raped by a man on a movie set when he was 11 years old.

Last year he told the Hollywood Reporter: "He had more direct abuse than I did.

"With me, there were some molestations, and it did come from several hands, so to speak, but with Corey, his was direct rape, whereas mine was not actual rape."

He said he has never named the men because he was worried about getting sued.

But he claimed that one of the men is "still prominent in the business".

Casey Affleck

He won a Best Actor Oscar for Manchester by the Sea.

But in 2010 Casey Affleck was sued by two women.

Film producer Amanda White accused him of "uninvited and unwelcome sexual advances".

She said he refused to pay her wages because she wouldn't spend a night in a hotel with him.

Another woman, cinematographer Magdalena Gorka, also sued. She said Casey Affleck crawled into bed with her while she slept for "routine instances" of sexual harassment.

His lawyers said the claims weren't true, and that both women wanted to make money from the actor.

The cases were settled out of court.

Evan Rachel Wood

In 2016, Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood said she had been raped at least twice.

Since the Harvey Weinstein story has come out, she's put up a long video explaining more: "I haven't named my abusers for a number of reasons.

"I'm one person against some very powerful people."

She describes leaving award shows when she's seen them walk up on stage and accept statues.

But she says she's not ready to relive what she went through.
