Nel reports on Obama's gun control plan

President Barack Obama has unveiled a new gun control plan for America.

He's called for a ban on assault weapons and wants wider background checks on gun buyers.

Obama wants stricter rules in place after 26 people - including 20 pupils - were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook school in Connecticut.

But the president will have to convince other politicians in Congress before the new gun control plan can go ahead.

The US has one of the highest rates of public gun ownership in the world and many Americans believe they have the right to keep and use them.
