The British Antarctic Survey's new research station, Halley VI, becomes fully operational this month. Documentary-maker, Kirk Watson, who's based in Scotland, photographed the station being built.

The new station replaces the 20-year-old Halley V and is the sixth to be built on Antarctica's Brunt Ice Shelf.

The station cost £25.8 million to build and has been designed to stand up to extreme winter weather. It has a gym, research labs and a doctor's surgery - it has even got a pool table.

It will be the new home for scientists researching the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field.

This ship, the James Clark Ross, picked up Kirk and the Halley VI builders after five months on the frozen continent.

Kirk plans to return to Antarctica next year when wounded military personnel will attempt to set three new world records.
