Stars out in 'force' for Force Awakens premiere

Stars and fans turned out in 'force' for the world premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

A squadron of Stormtroopers were among the 4000 guests invited.

The event took place in Hollywood in the US. Actress Gwendoline Christie plays Captain Phasma.

The Force Awakens sees the return of Jedi Luke Skywalker, played by actor Mark Hamill, and reunites the cast of the original film.

The plot remains a closely guarded secret, and all guests had to sign temporary confidentiality agreements. Filmmaker George Lucas has worked on all seven movies.

New cast members include the relatively unknown British actress, Daisy Ridley.

The Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm's collaboration also stars Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.

And actors John Boyega, who plays Finn (L) and Poe Dameron actor, Oscar Isaac (R).

R2-D2 also attended the event and was introduced by director J.J. Abrams. The film is due to be released on Thursday 17 December 2015.
