Fans have turned out in force for the European premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Darth Vader led dozens of Star Wars characters onto the red carpet.

The Wookiee Chewbacca was among them...

as well as two familiar droids - R2-D2 and C-3PO.

The Force Awakens sees the return of Jedi Luke Skywalker, played by actor Mark Hamill, and reunites the cast of the original films...

including Carrie Fisher, who plays Princess Leia. She decided to take on a stormtrooper during the premiere.

New cast members include the relatively unknown British actress, Daisy Ridley...

and actors John Boyega, who plays Finn (left) and Poe Dameron actor, Oscar Isaac (right).

The event took place in Leicester Square in London on Wednesday night. Director JJ Abrams (left) and Star Wars creator George Lucas (right) were there. George said: "It's like coming home to an event we've done for the last 40 years, but this is the biggest by far."

Star Wars fans, many of them waving lightsabers, waited hours for a glimpse of their favourite actors. Harrison Ford, who plays Han Solo, stopped to sign autographs.
