Professor Hawking studied the big bang theory, so it seems appropriate that he also appeared on the science-themed comedy programme named after it, in 2012. The Big Bang Theory creators today tweeted this picture, writing: "In loving memory of Stephen Hawking. It was an honour to have him on The #BigBangTheory. Thank you for inspiring us and the world."

He was given the signature yellow skin colour when he starred in The Simpsons. In one episode Professor Hawking revealed he planned to steal Homer's idea for a 'donut shaped universe'! The show's Exec Producer Al Jean said: "The world knew him as another Einstein; to us he was an action figure, wheelchair sold separately. I treasure every all-too-brief interaction we had with this true giant of a man."

He also appeared in several episodes of Futurama. In one episode, Professor Hawking's body disappeared and he'd become a head in a jar. But it was no ordinary jar - it was rocket powered, and he could shoot lasers from his eyes to temporarily stun people!

Professor Hawking also popped up in the season six finale of Next Generation for a game of poker, playing against holograms of famous scientists Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton. Professor Hawking is known to be a famous 'Trekkie' - that's what big fans of Star Trek are called.

Professor Hawking is known for his sense of humour, and he did his bit for Red Nose Day by starring in a special Little Britain comedy sketch for Comic Relief. In it, he turns into a Transformer to attack co-stars David Walliams and Catherine Tate!
