Blackpool pier partly destroyed by fire overnight

A large fire has destroyed parts of Blackpool's Central Pier, one of the country's most famous tourist attractions.

So far they don't know the cause of the fire but there will be an investigation to find out.

A ride was destroyed in the blaze, which started halfway down the pier next to a warehouse.

The fire started just after 03:00 in the morning, but about 50 firefighters and 10 fire engines were able to put it out quickly.

The Promenade around the pier was closed for a time after the fire was put out, but has now reopened.

This is one of three piers in Blackpool and was the second one to be built in the town in 1868.

The Grade II-listed North Pier was badly damaged by a storm in 2013.

South Pier, originally called Victoria Pier, is the youngest of the three structures, opening in 1893.
