Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne started off the action with a diving header from Riyad Mahrez's cross to score Manchester City's first goal. It was the fastest ever Champions League semi-final goal, after just 94 seconds.

City's Gabriel Jesus quickly added a second goal at close range after just 11 minutes, doubling the home side's lead.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward marked the goal with his phone celebration - he says the gesture is in honour of his mum, when he picks up the phone he's pretending to ring her!

Karim Benzema got Real Madrid back into the match, making it 2-1 when he swept home Ferland Mendy's cross after 33 minutes. The French striker is enjoying his best ever season for Real.

The goals continued in the second half - young England star Phil Foden restored Man City's two-goal advantage with a header in the 53rd minute. He became the highest-scoring English player in the Champions League while 21 or younger, with nine goals overall.

It was a quick reply from Real, as another young star, Brazilian attacker Vinicius Junior, skilfully runs from his own half straight into the box to make it 3-2. The Brazilian has now travelled with the ball at his feet for a total of 2801 metres in the Champions League this term - the furthest distance of any player.

Bernando Silva celebrates after making it 4-2 to City, with a powerful shot into the top left of the net, in the 74th minute. It was 13th goal across all competitions this season to tie the best-ever single season return of his career.

There was still time for more drama though! The referee gave a penalty to Real after Aymeric Laporte handled the ball in this tussle with Benzema giving Real Madrid a way back into the match.

With just eight minutes to go a cool Karim Benzema takes the opportunity to chip the ball into the centre of the goal, tricking goalkeeper Ederson. This is known as a 'Paneka' penalty and it made the score 4-3 on the night. It also made Benzema the Champions League top scorer so far this season with 14 goals in the competition.

After a thrilling game Manchester City will take a slender Champions League semi-final advantage to the Bernabeu - home of Real Madrid - after holding on to win 4-3. The second leg is on Wednesday 4 May.
