6000 jobs will be safer as a result of the announcement

Car company Nissan are due to announce that they're going to be making future electric versions of its two best selling cars in Sunderland.

The models are called Qashqai and Juke, and are two of the Japanese company's best sellers.

The announcement should mean that 6,000 jobs at the Nissan car factory will be kept safe, which should also also help to protect other jobs and businesses in the area, who provide services for the factory and the people who work there.

Electric cars need to be plugged in rather than filled with petrol

In September, Nissan said that by 2030, it would only manufacture electric vehicles, despite the government postponing a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars that had been due to come in that year to 2035.

The firm's boss Makoto Uchida said at the time it was the right thing to do for its business, customers and for the planet.

Nissan began producing electric Juke and Qashqai cars in the North East in 2022 and has already also committed to producing the successor to its Leaf electric car at its factory in Sunderland.
