Football club Everton have lost another two points after breaking Premier League rules for a second time.

Football clubs are allowed to make a loss of up to £105m over three years, but an independent Commission found Everton had breached that limit in the three years leading up to 2022-23.

They were first deducted points for having broken these rules in November last year, but it's now been found that they broke the rules again for another three year period.

Everton say they will appeal against the decision.

Who are the independent Commission?

The independent Commission are a group of people who sit independently of the Premier League - meaning they are not involved directly in Premier League matters.

The Premier League says: "The members of the Commission were appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel."

The independent commission says that Everton had lost more than the £105m limit by £16.6m in the three-year period up to 2022-2023.

Everton have now dropped to 16th in the Premier League table following the two point deduction and sit two points above the relegation zone.

As a result of the independent commission's findings, the Premier League asked for Everton to lose five points in addition to the six points they lost in 2023 for breaching rules.

But the commission felt that this amount was too much and recommended two points instead.

This means that Everton have lost eight points this season as a result of breaking the Premier League's financial rules.

In a statement Everton said it was "extremely concerned" by the "inconsistency" of the punishments they had been given.

But they said they were "committed to working" with the Premier League to solve any issues.

Nottingham Forest are another football club in the Premier League to have lost points this season for breaking the rules, but are challenging their punishment.

Everton plans to appeal their point deduction, but there's no guarantee that this appeal will be heard before the end of this season.
