Storm Pierrick: French storm bringing floods to areas across the UK

As well as having to deal with Storm Kathleen, there’s been a new storm behind the wetter and windier weather that lots of people have been experiencing today. It’s been named Storm Pierrick by Météo-France, the French national weather service, but it’s had an effect on the UK too.

According to the Met Office, Storm Pierrick has landed at the same time as other weather events, including large waves and one of the highest tides of the year. This has meant that areas along the coast have been dealing with challenging conditions.

Across Monday and today, the Environment Agency issued flood alerts for lots of places in the UK, including the coast around the Isle of Wight, the Cumbrian coast and parts of north-east England. Rail services in Bristol and in Hampshire have also been affected by flooding

Around 180 people were evacuated from a caravan park in West Sussex to keep safe from flooding. Other areas had very strong winds and waves, causing some damage to buildings - including a beach café in Falmouth.

This fairground in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, was flooded during a very high tide. Warnings are still in place for some areas of the UK until 6pm, but the Met Office has predicted that the storm will move to bring a colder, but hopefully drier, weather.
