With a bandage around his ear, which was wounded during the attack, he was welcomed on stage at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he received huge applause from his supporters.

While he didn't speak at this event, Donald Trump says he hopes to "bring the country together" in a speech later this week.

Political rallies are big events in the US

The former US president, Donald Trump is campaigning to be elected as president again - he is taking on the current US president, Joe Biden in a rematch of the 2020 US election.

Millions of people in the United States will be voting for who they want to represent their country in November.

There are two main political parties in the US - the Republicans and the Democrats.

Donald Trump is the presidential candidate for the Republican party.

While campaigning, Mr Trump was speaking at an event in Pennsylvania, known as a political rally, which is a place where people gather to hear speeches from candidates.

He was on a stage speaking to supporters when he was shot at and injured.

The former president was then rushed away from the stage by his protection officers who surrounded him.

Mr Trump later confirmed on social media that the top part of his ear had been wounded in the attack.

During the incident, the suspected gunman was shot dead by the Secret Service, which protects political leaders and their families in the United States.

One person in the crowd was killed in the shooting and two others were also injured.

What has been the reaction?

Donald Trump's political opponent, president Joe Biden, who is a Democrat, spoke to the nation on television from inside the White House. He called on the country to "stand together" and said that people should settle political differences "peacefully".

The UK's Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was among world leaders to send "best wishes" to Donald Trump after the shooting.

Writing on social media, the prime minister said: “Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack."

Members of the Secret Service rushed to cover Donald Trump after shots were fired

Questions are now being asked about the role of the Secret Service in protecting the former president.

The FBI - which is the Federal Bureau of Investigation - is in charge of intelligence inside the US and its agents are investigating why the attack happened.

FBI special agent Kevin Rojek admitted that it had been "surprising" that the attacker had been able to fire a weapon at Mr Trump.

President Joe Biden has said there will be an independent review into the incident.

The US Secret Service has said in a statement that it understands "the importance" of the review and will "participate fully".

What is the US Secret Service?

The Secret Service works to protect current and former presidents in the US.

Angelia Wilson, Professor of Politics at the University of Manchester, told Newsround: "Men and women in the Secret Service are specially trained like the army or police force.

"They look after presidents, former presidents and their families - even their children will have Secret Service agents go to school with them to make sure they're safe.

"As the presidential campaign gets started, candidates also have service agents.

Explaining why being US president can be a dangerous job that needs protection, Professor Wilson says:

"America is seen as a leading nation in the world and if another country or another individual doesn't like America they may try to harm the country by attacking a president or a member of their family and the Secret Service is there to keep them safe."

Why is American politics so divided?

The debate over politics in the US has often been angry, especially on social media.

Professor Wilson says: "In America, there are only two parties which sets it up as: you're either on our team or someone else's team."

She says that a lot of the language from both candidates, and also the people that support them, has been quite aggressive.

"There has been an increase in language that's more like a bully on a playground with a lot of hatred," added the professor.

In America, it’s also not unusual for people to have a gun. Unlike the UK, almost every adult in the US can own or carry one.

Professor Wilson says: "guns are very accessible in America - Most people over the age of 18 are able to buy a gun immediately with little to no background checks," she says, adding to the reasons why a president or former president needs protection.

At the convention it was announced that Donald Trump had named JD Vance, a senator from Ohio, to be his running mate which means he'll become vice-president if Mr Trump wins the election.

Vance was once a critic of Donald Trump, but has since become one of his strongest supporters.

On Monday, Donald Trump also had a big legal win, when criminal charges against him were dismissed.

He faced them over his handling of classified government documents after he stopped being president, some of which were marked as top secret.

Donald Trump is already the only former or sitting president to be convicted of a crime, but this decision means he will not have to face another criminal trial before American adults vote in the election on 5 November.
