Watch: Snowy Sunday in parts of the UK

Snow and ice is causing travel disruption and schools closures in several areas of the UK after a weekend of cold weather.

More than 70 schools in the north east of Scotland have not been able to open as usual because of the heavy snowfall.

Hundreds of schools in Yorkshire and Lancashire have also confirmed they will be closed for the first day back after the Christmas break because of the weather conditions.

The Met Office, which monitors UK weather, has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice covering most of Scotland, Wales, northern England and the Midlands, lasting until midday on Monday. A yellow warning for ice is covering most of Northern Ireland until 11:00am.

With more heavy rain on the way and melting snow, there are also more than 100 flood warnings for parts of England, which means flooding is expected in those areas. There are more than 200 flood alerts in England and Wales meaning flooding is possible.

The start of the week will see transport by train and at airports facing continued delays due to the weather.

Manchester Airport had to close both of its runways again because of "heavy snow" early on Monday morning, before announcing they had been cleared and reopened again.

Manchester, along with a number of other airports - including Liverpool and Birmingham - were forced to close their runways for several hours on Sunday due to snow, however most have since reopened.

Elsewhere flooding has blocked a number of railway lines across England, causing delays to services and cancellations.

Saturday night into Sunday saw several centimetres of heavy snow and freezing temperatures across the UK.

Some areas experienced power cuts and temperatures fell to as low as -11C in parts of Scotland.

The Met Office says temperatures will remain below average on Monday, with frost and ice in places across the UK.

They also warned that some rural communities could be cut off by snow, with travel delays and power cuts likely in northern England - where up to 15cm more snow could fall in those areas.
