A zoo in Poland is looking for the public's help to name a rare baby deer.

The female southern pudu was born at Warsaw Zoo two months ago.

The new addition belongs to the second smallest species of deer in the world, with adults measuring less than 50 cm tall.

Keepers are asking for suggestions starting with the letter "P" like other animals born there this year.

Southern pudus are native to forest areas in the South American countries of Chile and Argentina.

They're currently listed as near threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Conservationists believe that numbers of the animals have declined in recent times, mainly due to loss of habitat and illegal poaching.

Southern pudus are the second smallest deer species in the world, with adults measuring up to 46 cm tall and weighing up to 15 kg.

Anna Tadra from Warsaw Zoo said they were delighted by their new addition, which was born in July - taking the zoo's population of the species up to four.

"This is a very important birth because it is an endangered species," she explained.

"The southern pudu is a very secretive animal...it's really hard to spot her in the open because she's hiding in the bushes somewhere under her mother's watchful eye."
