People across the world have been looking to the skies, hoping to see the Perseid meteor shower.

Of all the meteor showers that take place, the Perseids are the most famous and are widely seen as the most spectacular too.

The shower takes place over a period of a few weeks in the summer and has been at its peak over recent days.
