Lily and Margot escaped during their routine flight on Monday

A search is underway for two “critically endangered” parrots who have escaped from London Zoo.

The parrots which are blue-throated macaws have been missing for several days after they escaped during one of their regular flights.

Zookeepers have been out searching for the parrots, who are sisters, named Lily and Margot.

Now keepers at London Zoo are asking Londoners to keep an eye out for the birds.

The public have been asked not to approach, or feed, the birds

The appeal has asked the public to keep an eye out for the birds which are described as "easy to spot" due to their blue and yellow feathers and between two and three feet tall.

They have asked people not to try and catch the birds if they spot them but instead to contact the zoo.

The zoo has asked for any sightings to be reported with a photo and geo coordinates if possible.

The missing macaw parrots are both two years old

The missing macaw parrots are both two years old and have lived at the zoo since they were born there.

A London Zoo spokesperson said: “On Monday 21 October, Lily and Margot were flying freely around the zoo as part of their daily routine,”

On previous occasions the young macaws have taken detours into the zoo’s trees, but have been coaxed down by keepers. This time they’ve ventured further afield.”

"The birds tend to stay very high up in trees, only descending for food and are most likely to stick together," they added.
