Meet your new Commonwealth Games mascot - a unicorn with a traffic cone for a horn called Finnie.

She will be the face of the athletics tournament being held in Glasgow in 2026.

Finnie was unveiled as part of a ceremony marking a year until the Games begin.

School children from Glasgow helped design her, and she replaces Clyde the Thistle, who was the mascot for the last Glasgow Games in 2014.

But you might be asking, why a traffic cone?

Well, one was put on the statue of the Duke of Wellington in the city centre around 40 years ago, and since then it's become an iconic symbol of the city.

People occasionally change the cone, and in 2023, the famous graffiti artist Banksy was rumoured to have placed one on top of the Duke's head.

The mascot said in a statement: "I'll be at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games next summer with a grin, a wave, maybe even a wee dance.

"I'm here to turn the nerves into excitement, stir the cheers and help turn every moment into something magic as Glasgow 2026 swings into the city."

The Commonwealth Games have had official mascots since 1978, so here are some from previous years.

Some of the Game's mascots have been used to send a message.

For example, in 2006 the Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne, Australia.

The organisers decided to make a South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo their symbol of the tournament to promote protection of the endangered species of bird.

Similarly, in 2010, India used a tiger as their mascot to send a message about the environment.

The organisers said at the time they wanted the big cat to remind people about the "fragile environment we live in" and encourage conservation of it.

Some, like Glasgow's Finnie, represent the place the Games are being held in.

In 2022, the tournament was in Birmingham, so a bull became the face of the Games to commemorate the iconic Bull Ring statue in the the city.
