Thousands of runners took part in the big race at the weekend

Thousands of people have taken part in the Great North Run on Sunday 7 September - one of the biggest half marathons in the world.

The 13.1-mile (21km) race started in Newcastle, heading through Gateshead and South Tyneside and finished in South Shields.

Around 60,00 runners took part in the event this year, with around 200,000 supporters turning up to cheer them on.

As well as the main event a junior race took place the Saturday 6 September, with more than 12,000 children getting involved.

However, the organisers of the event have now apologised after the medals that were handed to people who finished the race, had the wrong city and river on them.

The medals were supposed to featured a bird's-eye-view of the locations from the route - Newcastle, Gateshead, South Shields and the River Tyne - but instead show a picture of Sunderland and the River Wear which have no involvement in the event.

The Great Run Company admitted it had "made a mistake", adding the joke "Wear sorry!".

"To answer the rumours that this was the route reveal for next year… sorry to disappoint, it's a mistake.

"Lots of people looked very closely at the designs and none of us picked it up."
