Mum Frances nurtured her plant with masses of manure and water

This is a mum versus son competition on a massive scale.
Frances and her son, Jonny, had a competition in Bungay, Suffolk, to see who could grow the BIGGEST pumpkin.
Jonny had three small pumpkin plants and gave his mum "the worst one".
So which pumpkin grower squashed the competition?

Frances warned her son "you know I'll win this competition"
Frances of course!
Her pumpkin came in at a huge 368kg (58 stone) - about half the weight of a small car.
So, how did the competition all start?
Jonny raised three pumpkin plants from specialist seeds he bought and shipped all the way from the US.
He then "chose the two better looking specimens", offering his mum the third plant.
However Frances took the competition seriously and was not to be beaten.
She treated her plant well, "spoiling it with masses of manure and plenty of water".

The competition got very competitive
Whilst Jonny, her son's, ended up weighing in at just 2.9 stone (19kg).
Jonny says he "knew quite early on I was beaten".
Frances had a set of tactics to really look after her pumpkin, including covering the plant up if the growing conditions were too hot, cold or wet.
However, not to be beaten, Jonny says they plan to re-run the competition next year.
Gourd luck Jonny - looks like you're going to need it!

Jonny knew early on that he was going to be beaten
Frances says her competitive streak comes from her "own mother" and she has now passed this onto her sons.
