There's not long to go until this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which will be taking place on 18 December.

Last year Olympian Keely Hodgkinson took the title, having won the 800m gold medal earlier that year.

But apart from the main prize there are also six other awards to be handed out.

The nominees for Young Sports Personality of the Year have been revealed but nominees for other categories will be announced over the next two weeks.

Let's find out more about the contest.

How is BBC Sports Personality of the Year decided?

The award goes to the person who has most captured the UK public's imagination during the year through their sporting achievements.

Before any voting opens to the public, a panel of experts puts together the shortlist of who they think should be included.

To be part of the list the athletes must be UK citizens or have played a significant amount of their sport in the UK.

Members of the panel decide who to choose based on, how much the athlete showcased UK sporting achievements on the national or international stage, and represented the breadth and depth of UK sports.

They also take into account the wider 'impact' of the person's sporting achievements.

The main Sport Personality of the Year, and Team of the Year award, are decided by a public vote.

This year audiences will also get the chance to vote for the World Sport Star of the Year before the show begins.
