Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a famous saint. Although we don't actually know exactly who he was, a popular belief is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD who was killed for marrying soldiers against the wishes of Emperor Gothicus
Some believe that Valentine's Day traces its origins back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, a celebration of fertility and love held in mid-February.
The first recorded Valentine's card was written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, in 1415. He wrote a poem to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London.
