'Seagull Boy' retains European screeching competition title

Seagull Boy strikes again!

That's right, 10-year-old Cooper from Derbyshire has defended his European title to claim victory for a second year in a row at the EC Gull Screeching contest in Belgium.

You might remember we spoke to Cooper about his ultra-realistic seagull impression last year after his first victory.

Well, he emerged victorious in the junior contest again this year - becoming the first junior contender to do so in the competition's history - but this time he faced tough competition from his seven-year-old sister Shelby, who is now known as 'Sea Gurl'.

"I feel really excited and shocked," said Cooper.

"They [the other competitors] were really good too - including Shelby."

Cooper and Shelby's mum, Lauren, told the BBC, "It's a very tough competition.

"Everyone who takes part is very, very good, so I'm very proud of them both.

"We are so happy that Cooper won again, but Shelby is going to be after that title next year, I think."

Cooper now has two gold medals to his name

The EC Gull Screeching contest takes place each year in the Belgian coastal town of De Panne.

People taking part in the competition are judged by a panel of experts and marine biologists on how good their impression of a gull is, with the aim to encourage people to think more kindly of the seabirds, which some people see as annoying.

The performance is scored out of 100 points, and the winner is the person who gets the most points.

Each of the five judges can award up to 20 points in total, broken down into five points for how the competitors were dressed and their movements and 15 points for how closely they were able to mimic the call of a seagull.

This year, Cooper's winning score was 87 out of 100 possible points, and Shelby got 81 points.

Cooper was awarded a medal and a hamper full of treats as a reward for his super-screeching.
