Great Manchester Run: Gemma Steel second as Betsy Saina wins

Gemma Steel took 16 seconds off her previous time at the Great Manchester Run.

Britain's Gemma Steel was runner-up for the second consecutive year at the Great Manchester Run.

The 29-year-old from Leicester ran 31mins 57secs to finish six seconds behind Kenyan winner Betsy Saina.

Kenya's Stephen Sambu won the men's 10km race in 27:30 - nine seconds off the course record.

British Paralympic champion David Weir claimed his sixth title in the men's wheelchair race, while compatriot Shelly Woods won the women's.

Weir finished in 20:57 while Woods crossed the line in 25:37.

Britain's European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey was 10th in the elite women's race in 33:21.

Saina was competing in Manchester for the first time and set the early pace before pulling ahead, as Steel battled with two-time marathon world champion Edna Kiplagat, who had to settle for third.

Steel told BBC Sport: "I know Betsy likes to run out ahead so it was about clawing seconds back at the end.

"It was good to be so close to her at the end. It's a big thing for me."

In the men's race, Stephen Mokoka of South Africa came second, eight seconds behind Sambu, while 40-year-old Kenyan-born American Bernard Lagat came in third.

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Haile Gebrselassie was also among the 40,000 runners at Sunday's event and came in 16th in the elite men's race.
