Morgan hits out at Derby

Eoin Morgan fell seven runs short of a double century for the Lions on day two of the tour match with Sri Lanka.

Resuming on 156 in his quest to win a place in England's Test team, Morgan took his stand with Samit Patel to 266 when Patel (119) lost his middle stump.

Morgan hit 30 fours and five sixes in his 226-ball innings before he was lbw, with the Lions declaring on 493-8.

Sri Lanka slipped to 157-7 and despite Suraj Randiv's 76, seamer Jade Dernbach took 5-44 as they were all out for 266.

It was a fine performance from Surrey's 25-year-old South African-born bowler, who was called up to replace the injured Ajmal Shahzad at the World Cup in the sub-continent this year, but is yet to make his international debut.

"Obviously we are all trying to push our own cases forward to the selectors," said the 6ft 2" paceman, ahead of Sunday's announcement of the England squad for the first Test with Sri Lanka in Cardiff on 26 May.

"We have four top-quality seamers vying for one position. It's nice to put yourself on show, and coming out with five wickets has done my name no harm. It was good to show people what I'm capable of.

"I'm obviously just new on the scene, so all I can do is keep putting performances together and keep putting my name there."

Steven Finn and Graham Onions had drawn a blank for almost 15 overs for the Lions with the new ball either side of lunch at Derby, until the Durham fast bowler had Tharanga Paranavitana lbw with some full length-swing.

Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan was dropped by Patel off Onions, while Finn exchanged words with Dilshan after being pulled for two fours and steered wide of slip for another within an over.

But a double change and the arrival of mediocre light under heavy cloud cover saw Shahzad strike in his first over, Dilshan edging an attempted drive to slip, and then Dernbach in his second when Mahela Jayawardene failed to get his bat out of the way and edged to Patel in the cordon.

Former captain Kumar Sangakkara fell to a very good catch down the leg- side by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow off fellow Yorkshireman Shahzad.

Dernbach then struck twice in two balls, Dinesh Chandimal well caught high at second slip by Jimmy Adams and Prasanna Jayawardene edging to first for a golden duck.

He had to wait until his next over for his hat-trick ball, testing Thilan Samaraweera with a quick yorker which the batsman did well to dig out.

Randiv reached a 91-ball 50 and Perera hit a lusty 47 from 45 balls until he holed out attempting another big hit to reach his half-century, from Patel's first delivery.

Then in the final over of the day, Dernbach took two in two again - bowling tailenders Dilhara Fernando and Nuwan Pradeep.
