Jonathan Trott climbs to ninth in ICC Test batting rankings

Jonathan Trott scored his seventh Test century in Galle

Jonathan Trott has entered the top 10 of the ICC Test batting rankings after his century against Sri Lanka in Galle.

The 30-year-old jumps six places to ninth, following his 112 in England's 75-run defeat in the first Test, his seventh Test century.

Alastair Cook drops nine places to 14th, while Kevin Pietersen falls two places to 22nd.

South African AB de Villiers has become joint world number one with Australia captain Michael Clarke.

Trott scored 12 and 112 in Galle, but Cook scored only 14 runs in the match, following his first-innings duck with 14 from 25 balls in the second.

Pietersen scored three in the first innings, but seemed on course for a decent score in England's second-innings run chase, only to fall for 30 when he clipped Suraj Randiv to midwicket and was caught by Mahela Jayawardene.

De Villiers joins Michael Clarke at the top of the pile on 821 points, after scoring 83 in South Africa's nine-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Hamilton Test, and 38 and 68 in the drawn Wellington Test.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, who had entered the Galle Test as the number one ranked Test batsman, scored just 14 runs in the match.

In the ICC Test bowling rankings, Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath climbed six places to a career-high seventh. The left-arm spinner took 6-74 and 6-97 in Galle.

England need to win the Colombo Test if it they are to retain the number one team ranking.

If they lose the series 2-0, they will drop from 118 ratings points to 113, three points behind South Africa. A 1-0 defeat will see England slip to 114 ratings points.
